Gov. Christie wants to cut out the Old Barracks
Gov. Chris Christie has proposed to eliminate all State funding for the Old Barracks. The museum has been operated in a private-public partnership with the State since 1917. The Old Barracks Association saved the South Wing in 1902 and a dozen year later convinced the State not to demolish the North Wing. The 1914 agreement says the Association will manage the museum “forever hereafter” and that the State, as owner, will provide funding...
The State has provided $375,000 a year since 1994. That’s now about 42% of the bare bones operating budget. The non-profit Old Barracks Association raises the other 58%. The Governor wants to shift all costs to the Association for this historically important State-owned site.
