Founded in 1902, the Old Barracks Association was comprised of well-connected members of Trenton Society. Women of the upper classes who were wealthy enough to employ servants often pursued philanthropic causes outside the home. Organizations such as the Colonial Dames and Daughters of the American Revolution allowed for affluent women to show their patriotic roots, socialize with peers, and do good-works.

The campaign to purchase the south wing of the Old Barracks, while very much in the public space, did not violate the private sphere the women occupied. Instead it was considered a patriotic cause, preserving a piece of American history for future generations.
